Volunteer and Support Local Food!!!

The Clinton County Farmers' Market is an important source of local, nutritious food in Clinton County. To be a part of supporting the market and helping it grow, join the Wilmington College AmeriCorps* VISTA Grow Food, Grow Hope Initiative and Energize Clinton County as a volunteer at the Farmers' Market.

Volunteers will provide support in two hour or two-and-a-half hour shifts and will be actively engaged with both vendors and shoppers of the Farmers’ Market  (collecting information through surveys and informal conversations) and will assist with the Grow Food, Grow Hope booth.

To volunteer:
(1) Check the schedule at the bottom of the page to identify times and dates for which we need volunteers
(2) Fill out the short form below so that we can contact you with more information about volunteering
(3) Click HERE to view and edit the volunteer schedule and type your name into the time slots that you would like to volunteer (we need two volunteers per shift)
(4) We will contact you with more information about getting orientated and comfortable as a Farmers' Market volunteer

If you have any questions, please e-mail Dessie Buchanan at dessie@buylocalcc.com or Energize Clinton County at info@energizecc.com.

Midland, OH 45148
(937)783-0689
nhertlein1@hughes.net

Currently, our small farm has berries, (try our wild berry pie), 3 large gardens full of fresh, homegrown produce and various varieties of flowers, to include sunflowers. Additionally, we have started bee keeping and plan to have honey coming soon. Ask us about the many health benefits of honey.

You can find us at the Wednesday Market at the Mural. Try our produce and ask us about the CSA program, (Community Supported Agriculture.) If you would like to be supplied with fresh, homegrown produce weekly, without the required acreage or work involved in planting and maintaining a garden, a CSA membership might be just what you’re looking for. We plan to take applications this fall for CSA memberships, to begin in June, 2010.

Pickard Farms has been farming since 1959 and a member of the Farmer’s Market since 2000 when it first opened. They feel a real sense of self satisfaction in providing healthy, fresh produce to the local population.

“We don’t negotiate on good food – it would be
the same as negotiating with a pharmacist on the price
of a prescription.”

Good food is just healthier for everyone. You can always recognize them by their big, decorated bus parked at their stand. In addition, Nancy just loves to meet people according to her husband Kent. She will readily engage in conversation with market buyers who just want to chat. Helping the local economy is another reason Pickard Farms participates in the market. Don’t forget to get a home-made cookie from the ever present jar on her table. They are fantastic and always fresh.

JON SHARP CORN

Jon Sharp, owner
6324 State Route 134 S.
Wilmington, OH 45177
(937) 685-6006
yvettesharp1@aol.com

A fixture at the Farmers’ Market, Jon offers two types of sweet, succulent corn in season. He has Jackpot and Ambrosia. Both types produce a bi-color cob which is exceptionally sweet with large kernels. Jon’s philosophy is to “do one thing and do it really well, and bring a good quality product to the consumer”. It must work as many days will see John’s truck empty except for a few loose corn husks later in the day.

ITEMS: corn (Jackpot and Ambrosia) in season.

Preparing the Corn:

Leave green husks on until just before it is to be boiled. Place large pot of water on stove to bring to a boil. Meanwhile, pull away all green leaves (husks) from corn. Remove the green silks from the tapered end of the cob. Plunge cobs into boiling water and cook from 7 to 12 minutes. Do not salt the water as this toughens the corn. Pile cooked ears high onto a plate and send to table. Serve with butter and salt.

This family operation has been a part of the Clinton County Farmers' Market since it began. This cottage industry prides itself in their local products - "The apples come straight from the tree, not from China" is one of their favorite sayings. Indeed, there is a difference between an apple that has been picked well before its time and allowed to ripen in a cardboard box and one that is ripened by the sun and picked at the peak of freshness and brought straight to the Market.

The produce provided by this family-run orchard includes 21 varieties of apples and several varieties of peaches and berries. They are able to offer a number of heirloom varieties as well.
