The New Year is a time for many to reflect on their daily habits and lifestyles and make resolutions for a “clean slate” or to be happier and healthier. In 2011, we encourage everyone to make smart and healthy food choices throughout the year – and what better place to start than the farmers’ market? Eating local food and buying local products can not only benefit you, but it can benefit the entire community!

Here some great reasons for shopping and eating locally in 2011:

  1. Local food is fresher. All of our producers are located in Clinton or an adjacent county, so our food is only travelling a matter of miles, not from across the country or beyond.
  2. Local food is healthier – many foods lose their nutritional value with storage and transportation.
  3. Buying local food supports the livelihood of our local food producers and their families.
  4. Local food just tastes better! Local foods ripen naturally and can be enjoyed at peak taste while in season.
  5. Local food reduces our carbon footprint with less fuel for transport and often less packaging.
  6. Local foods can be traced from the farm to the table– you know where your food is coming from and can talk face to face with the people who grew it.
  7. Local foods offer more variety. Our farmers offer more heirlooms and unique fruits and vegetables than the “name brand” supermarket varieties.
  8. Buying local foods supports your local economy helping to keep money and jobs in the community.
  9. Buying local food supports and helps preserve farmland and green space in our community.
  10. It’s a fun way to be part of the community, bump into friends, and mingle with local farmers.

In addition to great local food, you can find unique artisan products from talented local vendors at the Winter Market. We welcome our newest artisan, David Halley, to the Market! David makes quality purple martin condos, as well as birdhouses and feeders featuring his own artwork. Check out his work at http://www.purplemartincondobuilders.com/.

*NEW* EBT Program

The Clinton County Farmers' Market proudly accepts EBT benefits!

The EBT Program allows participating vendors at the Farmers' Market to accept SNAP food assistance benefits (commonly known as food stamps) like cash for applicable food items! SNAP benefits will be accepted at both our Saturday and Wednesday weekly markets.

HOW DOES THE MARKET EBT PROGRAM WORK?

1. Customers using an Ohio Direction Card will come to the Market Information Booth and tell the staff how much they would like to withdraw from their card to use at the Market.

2. Staff will give $1 wooden tokens to the customer. These tokens can be used at any authorized vendor displaying the "We Welcome SNAP Benefits" sign. These tokens can ONLY be used at the Clinton County Farmers' Market.

The current authorized vendors are:

BOB WEBB FARMS

THE BREAD LADY

HENSON FAMILY FARM
JUDI SHIDAKER

PICKARD FARMS GARDEN DELIGHTS

TAYLOR’S TUNIS

3. Customers will use the $1 tokens to buy applicable food items from the participating vendors.
The tokens CAN buy: fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, bread, baked goods, honey, jams, jellies, salsa, herbs and spices, sauces, dip mixes, condiments, and seeds or plants that produce food.

The tokens CANNOT be used to purchase any non-food items. Also, customers CANNOT get change back for token-only purchases.

4. If you have unused tokens, you can hold on to them for the next Market (tokens are good through the summer season) or you can return them to the Market Information Booth to get the money reimbursed to your Direction Card.

------

WHY SHOP AT THE FARMERS' MARKET?

1. Local vendors can offer great deals on fruits and vegetables at peak season!

2. Know where your food is from - everything at the Market comes from Clinton County or a surrounding county!

3. Fresh, locally-grown & homemade food just tastes better!

4. The Market is fun for the whole family! We feature live music and special events like cooking demos and kid's days - all for free!
